Grum Really great question! If you’re first starting out, you want to create your target sales. Even if your first year is expected to gross $1,0000 or $5,000 that is fine. The same numbers can be created as mentioned in the post above by using your targets (rather than actual real numbers. Entrepreneurs that want to own a serious business all start with estimated numbers and then evaluate their figures at the end of the year, while planning for the next year. I hope this helps!

Hi Angela – I am troubled… it seems that many of your points rely on having previous experience to fall back on – e.g. to evaluate your COGS, or how many sessions you might book each month… I am not yet at the point where I can look back at this historical data – I am at the stage where I want to consider starting a business, but have no history as yet. I guess there is a step missing between where I am, and where I need to be to make use of the advice above – so perhaps my reading about business plans is premature at the moment? What advice do you have to offer someone in my position – I have friends and family telling me my photos are worthy, and they all want my services (for free, obviously!!), but I don’t know how to move from here to actually having ‘real’ paying clients.
